North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia and now Georgia have all declared state of emergency's due to the incoming Hurricane Florence. Hurricane Florence is not alone as it is followed by tropical storm Isaac and hurricane Helene. I have family in both Virginia and North Carolina and they have all decided to stay home instead of leaving. It has become a habit for people to choose to stay at their homes and fight through tropical storms rather than evacuate. I am beginning to wander if the reason in which people are staying in the eye of storms is because of their own stubbornness or because they are unaware of how serious the storms are.
With so many topics spreading in the news from pop culture to politics there does not seem to be enough media talking about severity of storms. Many people do not know that Hurricane Florence is being followed by two other tropical storms. Fake news has become so prominent that many people do not even care about the real news regardless of how severe it actually is.
Yes, I completely agree with you that the reason many people choose not to leave their homes are that the severity is not being believed. I believe since different media news outlets portray things in the way that will get them the most views makes people believe that emergency evacuations are not a severe as they make them seem. Since fake news is everywhere people can sometimes make the wrong decisions based off of what they see on the news. I personally feel as though any time emergency evacuations are out in place, everyone should evacuate.
ReplyDeleteI did not know Hurricane Florence was being followed by two other tropical storms. I guess it gets lost in all the other things in the media. I think people do tend to stay at their homes during times like these because they don't think it's that serious, but also it could be because they aren't financially prepared to evacuate their homes. If they didn't have family to go to, it's expensive to stay in hotels and gas gets pricey as well. They might think riding the storm out is a better option. They'd rather gamble with either having to pay to fix home damage or pay for the gas/hotel fares. I definitely do think the important news gets lost in the fake news, so we must find ways to overcome the deception.
ReplyDeleteI also agree that this storm was broadcasted very poorly in regards to its accuracy. In my opinion, people can o whatever they want. You cant force someone to leave their home that they own. If they want to risk it, they will and have every right to. It was not necessary for every single person to leave town, but for some people closer to the coast it certainly was! It all depends on how much they can handle, the architecture of their home and obviously their exact location.
